How To Disinfect Door Hardware


When you stop to think about it, every door handle, knob, lever, push/pull, exit device, or other products you have used to open a door has probably been touched by many, many people before you. It's like shaking a lot of potentially dirty hands.

But, don't worry! This problem is easily solved when you take the time to properly disinfect your door hardware. Do it for you, your customers, employees, guests, and others.

Now more than ever, it's important to disinfect your door hardware on a regular basis. How to do this correctly on commercial grade door hardware without ruining your product is easier than you think. Please refer to Allegion's following guidelines below:

Importantly, do not use any abrasive or harsh cleaners, as this will break down the surface coating; refer to the product’s manual for more information.

Recommended Cleaning

▪ We recommend starting with mild liquid detergent mixed with water.

▪ Wipe surfaces gently, and do not spray or immerse.

▪ With water only, wipe surfaces again to remove any detergent residue; still, do not spray or immerse.

Recommended Disinfecting

▪ Wipe surfaces gently, and do not spray or immerse.

▪ Per CDC guidelines, do not wipe the surfaces dry; rather, allow them to air dry.

Note, that antimicrobial hardware helps deter bacteria, but not viruses, so even antimicrobial hardware needs to be properly cleaned regularly.
